Visiting assigned destinations

This week our class was assigned eight destinations to visit in Second Life.

#1-Virtual Harlem, which is set in circa 1920's and the purpose of this site is to educate students about the Jazz Age.  Here are some snapshots of my visit here:

Here I am outside the Hellfighter Museum.

And here I am sitting inside the Hellfighter Museum.

I then went walking around and came across a British phone box and I had to figure out how to get inside of it.  I thought that perhaps I would be able to pick up the phone but I had no luck.

Trying to figure out how to sit inside the carriage while it was moving was tricky but I finally figure out how to do it.  I then went for a nice ride around the streets of Harlem. I could actually hear the clip clocking of the horse's hooves while I was on the ride.  It made it appear so realistic.

Here is a picture of the front of a Brownstone house:

Here I am sitting on a chandelier in the Josephine Baker Museum and here I am looking out the window on the second floor of the museum:

I then went out to search for another place to visit and came across this cafe:

Here's what it looks like inside the cafe and then a picture of me sitting inside the cafe:

I then went to a place called Dark Tower and I found it a bit strange.  Here is the spiral staircase:

I had a hard time trying to figure out how to maneuver up and down the staircase but in the end was successful.  And here I am reading a book in the Dark Tower.  As you see, I am laying down enjoying a good read.

Before leaving this island I went for a walk to see if I could see what Harlem looked like and here is a panoramic view of it:

Simply breathtaking!  I really enjoyed my visit here and especially like the music that was playing.  I may have to come back here in the future to see what else I can learn about it.  In addition, there was  tram that was moving about in the streets but every time I got close to it, it would take off.  I really wanted to take a ride on the tram.

#2-ISTE Island - The purpose of this island is to educate and provide resources to further education through blogging, podcasting, etc. by collaborating with other teachers in Second Life.

Here's a picture of the orientation area:

While walking around I saw a large watermelon being iced down in a metal bucket so I thought why not have a piece of it?  Here I am eating a slice of watermelon.

And here I am swinging on a swing:

I then decided to walk around to see what the island had to offer.  Here is an information center where I was able to pick up a few free things from the boxes that you see on the shelves.

Next I walked around and found the Bloggers Hut.  Inside there were several individual blogs that you can click on.  If you clicked on them, you would be taken to that individual's blog on a webpage.

And here I am sitting at a table inside the Blogger's Hut.

Next I came across the Podcaster's Hut:

And here I am inside the Podcaster's Hut.  While I was here I noticed a bowl of Halloween candy on a table and was able to get a piece for myself.  I then clicked on something called "Tips and Tricks" and received a notecard about Podcasting.

#3-Four Whispering Strange Matters - The purpose of this virtual island is to educate students on the key themes of William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth."  When I first arrived here I could hear people reciting the play.  I then found myself here:

This is the only picture that I took here.  In this picture I am walking around trying to find my way out and I never did.  My only opportunity to get out was to teleport myself somewhere else.  I found this place off and weird.

#4-Zoobyland - This virtual island has lots of different kinds of animals to buy and gift to people.  I clicked on "Buy" underneath the Brown Doberman and found out that it costs $2700L.  I guess I won't be buying this dog.

And here I am flying by a dragon.  I tried and tried to sit on the dragon to get a good picture but was unable to get a good shot of it.

If you're an animal lover this is a great place to visit.

#5-Sistine Chapel - The real one is located at the Vatican in Rome, Italy but this guy did a good job building a copy of it in Second Life.  It must have taken him hours to build this!  It is absolutely beautiful and so colorful!  The paintings and tapestries are so life like.  Here are some snapshots that I took to document my trip:

Here I am looking up at the ceiling:

This was such a nice place to visit!

#6-Virtual Ability Island-This island is for people with disabilities so that they can escape and be a part of another world where they can walk around, fly, etc.  Here is where someone goes to figure out how to do things on the island.

And here I am sitting at a picnic table inside The Aviary and Butterfly Room:

Next is where you go to learn how to fly:

After reviewing how to fly, I walked around and found a place to buy free clothes and was able to get a few outfits.  I also learned how to wear outfits and make a folder for my outfits.

I then found this area, which was full of free stuff to buy.  I was able to get quite a variety of free items.

My last few moments on this island were spent riding a hot air balloon around the island.  Here are a few snapshots of that:

#7-International Space Flight Museum - this was a very interesting and cool place to visit.  Here are some of the pictures that I took:

It was fun seeing how high I could fly by the rocket.

And here I was able to click on this box and ride a hovercraft around the island.

#8-AKK Horse Ranch- this virtual island had nice classical music playing while I walked around.  I was able to get a free demo horse, which I will be riding in one of my Second Life classes very soon.  Here are some pictures that I took to document my trip:

Here I am looking at some of the many horses that are on the island.
I found out that if I clicked on a poseball, I could pet this fantasy horse.

Here I am sitting in a carriage.

And here I am standing on a bridge overlooking the water.

Overall, I had a great time visiting these virtual island.  The only one that I didn't really like was the Four Whispering Strange Places.  This could have been due to me not being able to figure out what to do here but all in all it seemed like a strange place to visit.  Perhaps that was its purpose.
